In the Spotlight: Historic rally car and karting action

Posted on 18 April 2017

If you’re standing at Redgate corner watching the race action, don’t be surprised if you hear a squeal of tyres behind you. Turn around and, as the tyre smoke clears, you’ll see a Group B rally car or a classic rally machine from the 1950s going through its paces with spectacular displays on the Tarmac Lake.

Donington Park was an RAC Rally stage in the 1980s, when the mighty Group B cars such as Audi quattros, MG Metro 6R4s, Ford RS200s, Porsche 911 RSRs and Peugeot 205 T16 reigned supreme, their four-wheel drive systems, lightweight composite panels and complex turbo and supercharging, combined with power in excess of 600bhp, making them unbeatable. You can expect to see a good number of these machines out at the Festival.

The British Historic Kart Club will also be taking to the Tarmac Lake, demonstrating their nimble little machines dating from the 1950s to the 1980s.
