In the spotlight: Historic Touring Car Challenge (HTCC) with Tony Dron Trophy

Posted on 28 March 2017

This grid of pre-1991 British and European Touring Cars features the type of beefy machines that most of us could only dream of driving back in period. It’s a veritable live-action Touring Car museum and it’s huge fun.

Former Touring Car stars such as Steve Soper and Patrick Watts are regular fixtures behind the wheel, and the battles extend right down the field, with each class really hotly contested. Expect to see plenty of Ford Capris, BMW M3s and Rover SDIs, not to mention Chevrolet Camaros, Triumph Dolomite Sprints and Jaguar XJSs. These are real race cars that competed in period (Patrick Watts goes all out in his original MG Metro Turbo!) and they are raced very hard indeed.

Last year MRL introduced a new element to HTCC, the Tony Dron Trophy, named in honour of the ‘70s Touring Car ace and Le Mans sports car driver, who we were delighted to welcome to DHF 2016. No doubt this year’s contenders for the Tony Dron Trophy will do him proud! Qualifying – 9.45 on Friday April 28, followed by a one-hour race at 13.35 on Saturday, April 29.
